Recap AU 2022

As you hopefully know by now, Autodesk University is a yearly event that is a premier learning and networking destination for AECO professionals worldwide. We were thrilled to both exhibit and speak at AU this year and connect with our outstanding colleagues, friends, and customers for the first time in 5 years.

When team UNIFI arrived at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center, there was some idea of what to expect, but as usual, Autodesk University blew the team away. Every day was a different experience with breaking-edge technology and intellectual talks featuring critical players in the AECO industry (including UNIFI’s own Dan Reid).

Some key events that took place during AU were the Autodesk Excellence Awards, Tech Trends: The Promise of Platform and Digital Transformation for People and the Planets, the daily classes that helped transform your team with the newest industry knowledge and trends, and the session were the Autodesk President, and CEO Andrew Anagnost spoke on how moving collaboration—and our data—to the cloud can help create the right solutions. Watching the speakers go over each topic made everyone in the room open their mouths with awe as they all took in new knowledge and technology.

Beyond that, the show floor was a huge hit full of bright minds and awesome solutions that have revolutionized. UNIFI’s booth quickly became known as the booth to stop by as we were offering demos that featured our soon-to-be-released cutting-edge V4 software (more details to come 😉) and the fact that we were hosting a $200 Door Dash gift card giveaway. Having eight of the UNIFI team members at the booth still wasn’t enough to handle the crowd, so UNIFI brought in the leadership team to help. The whole team was ecstatic to see not just prospects but customers from leading AECO firms such as MG2, PCL Construction, SSOE, and many more stop by. Journeying with our customers is what we’re all about, so the opportunity to see them face to face was one of our greatest highlights.

We wrapped up AU with a panel discussion featuring UNIFI’s CTO Dan Reid. The audience was full of current customers, prospects, and attendees interested in learning about the cutting-edge technology in Autodesk’s app store. Dan was grateful for the opportunity to discuss UNIFI today and what the near future holds. We asked an audience member for feedback on the talk and were thrilled to hear, “I was on the edge of my seats, and confident in where UNIFI is headed.”

Our wonderful experience at Autodesk University this year reinforces that it is an absolute must to attend if you are in the industry. Thank you to Autodesk and our wonderful customers and colleagues for making Autodesk University 2022 a huge success.

The Top Five Proactive BIM Habits

The Top Five Proactive BIM Habits

We have previously discussed the worst BIM habits and how to prevent them as they can potentially harm your team’s speed, efficiency, and collaboration. We have now decided to discuss the best proactive BIM habits to have as a BIM Manager that will make your team as efficient as possible. With these excellent habits, you can improve your role as a BIM Manager, stay one step ahead of tasks and enhance your organization’s ability to complete projects quickly.

Listed below are the top five proactive BIM habits to have as a BIM Manager:

Be Proactive

You must take ownership of your BIM tasks and projects. Taking pride in your organization, your team, and your work will be the starting point to all the other good BIM habits listed below.

Begin With The End In Mind

Understand where you want to go in your role, organization, and career path. Think of it in terms of planning and then working on the plan. Start small by holding meetings with a specific topic and relevance, such as a meeting about BIM training or support. Target your BIM discussion to maximize the value of having the right people together, take notes, and assign the right tasks to the right people. Then from there, go on to putting the next steps into action.

Put First Things First

You should manage your time, daily tasks, and BIM projects wisely. Some project management tools that could help are Slack, Monday, and Clickup or even a time management tool like Clockify.

Think Win-Win And Synergize

These two habits go together and have multiple meanings for BIM Managers. Think of “win-win” scenarios when you develop BIM standards and procedures (quality assurance) for your firm as well as the implementation (quality control) aspects. As you develop these BIM standards, think about the process you will employ to measure compliance with the standards.

Sharpen The Saw

Be sure to go above and beyond before being recognized with a promotion. Earn a promotion through your actions. Could you learn new BIM software like UNIFI’s industry-leading content management platform? Save Time Finding BIM Content Using These Saved Search Ideas

One of the biggest time wasters for a BIM management team is finding the right content.  When content is buried in a complex folder structure or requires team members to recall exactly how to navigate to an item, it uses up a team’s valuable time and money. UNIFI’s Saved Search feature eliminates this problem by allowing you and your team members to find content in seconds. In this article, we want to give you some ideas on how you can use this tool to your best advantage.

Project Kickoff

One fantastic way to utilize UNIFI’s Saved Searches is by creating a group of “Project Kickoff” categories. These saved searches can house the Revit Template and commonly used items that normally would be stored in the Template file (for example, walls, doors, and windows that are company-standard).  By saving project kickoff items as saved searches in UNIFI, you can batch insert exactly what’s needed and nothing more.

Another way to utilize saved searches is by creating a saved search that is specific to a particular application (such as Dynamo).  For example, you could have one saved search for custom packages and one for Dynamo-version-specific packages. You could also have saved searches for Alpha, Beta, and General Population scripts.  Since UNIFI can store all content types, using a Saved Search helps makes it easy to quickly store and locate your non-Revit content.

Stage of Work

Another way to take advantage of saved searches is by grouping them in the same way that you would organize the work on a project.  For example, materials could be organized based on which ones are Enscape-ready. Or maybe you have saved searches organized by render-ready content, such as people, vegetation, and vehicles. Organizing content based on the stage of work allows you to have everything that you need for that particular task right at your fingertips.

Area of Work

You can also create save searches based on the area of work.  For example, a marketing team could create saved searches that consolidate marketing materials, colors, and even previous projects so that they are easier to find.  Or perhaps a firm that works with a wide range of residential and commercial content could separate content by those categories, since residential content could vary greatly from those used in commercial construction. This organization helps specific teams find the content that they need quickly.

How-to Internal Documents

Saved searches can also help you organize your company’s standards documents, how-to guides, and best practices so that your team can access them quickly.  For example, you could store templates for common practices on projects, BIM standards/naming conventions, getting started guides, instructional videos, and more.

Hopefully we’ve given you some ideas on how to get the most out of UNIFI’s Saved Search feature. This tool prevents your team from having to hunt down content that they need or, worse yet, re-creating the same piece of content because they couldn’t find it.
